He will highlight current funding activities and efforts to establish closer ties with industry. gebettin@utmb.edu

Biography:
George Bettinger, Ph.D. in Microbiology, has over twenty-five years experience in industry where he managed groups in microbiology and toxicology at E.I. DuPont, and headed a therapeutic immunoadsorption technology program. He served as Director of R&D for C.R. Bard Cardiopulmonary, was Director of R&D and Plant Manager for Mallinckrodt’s diagnostic catheter business. He then became Vice President for Engineering at MedSource Technologies and later at CryoCath Technologies Inc in Montreal, both medical device development and manufacturing companies. He joined UTMB in 2002 as a Technology Manager, and was appointed Associate Director of the Center for Technology Development in 2004 where he is involved in licensing activities and is helping to create an office of research translation in support of UTMB’s emerging infectious disease and biodefense programs.

Center for Technology Development/ Office of Research Translation:
Dr. John Stobo, M.D., President of UTMB, recently created The Center for Technology Development within the Office of the President and appointed James C. Arie, Ph.D. as Director. Having this center reporting directly to the university president was done to provide UTMB leadership with a better understanding of the activities associated with the licensing and development of UTMB technologies and to recognize the growing importance of these efforts in the context of the NIH Roadmap and UTMB's role in the region. The Center will continue to support faculty, staff, and students with their intellectual property needs (patents, confidentiality agreements and sponsored research) while insuring compliance with University of Texas System regulations.

At the same time, an exploration was initiated into the need and potential benefits of an Office of Research Translation within the Center designed to facilitate the selection, funding, and implementation of products emanating from the university's research. This evaluation is being led jointly by Dr. David Gorenstein Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research in the School of Medicine and Dr. George E. Bettinger, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Center for Technology Development. It has focused initially in the area of emerging infectious disease and biodefense and is aimed at meeting national needs as supported by grants supporting the Western Regional Center of Excellence and the planned Galveston national Biocontainment Laboratory. Future areas for application of this model are foreseen in other areas of academic research, and will examine how to leverage success as an aid to regional growth in biotechnology, pharmaceutical commercialization efforts.
