Title: Role of Technology Transfer Offices in Economic Development

Speaker:
Dr. Karthika Perumal joined University of Texas Medical Branch - Galveston (UTMB) in 2001 as a Technology Manager and is responsible for managing the technologies that originate with UTMB faculty and staff. She is involved in technology assessment, patent portfolio development and structuring of cash and equity-based license transactions. Her scientific expertise includes the areas of molecular pharmacology, cell signaling and post-transcriptional gene regulation. She holds a bachelors degree in Industrial Biotechnology from Anna University, Chennai, India and Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. She is affiliated with the Association of University Technology Managers and the Licensing Executives Society.

Content:
While participation in regional economic development is not a new role for most university tech transfer offices, economic development metrics have not been a part of their performance measures. Increasing number of internal and external constituencies are expecting universities and local colleges to be more than effective partners in economic development. Dr. Perumal will highlight the challenges for a tech transfer office when professionals with differing missions but common causes come together to establish productive alliances.
