Title: Role of Technology Transfer
Offices in Economic Development
Speaker:
Dr. Karthika Perumal joined University of Texas Medical Branch
- Galveston (UTMB) in 2001 as a Technology Manager and is responsible
for managing the technologies that originate with UTMB faculty
and staff. She is involved in technology assessment, patent
portfolio development and structuring of cash and equity-based
license transactions. Her scientific expertise includes the
areas of molecular pharmacology, cell signaling and post-transcriptional
gene regulation. She holds a bachelors degree in Industrial
Biotechnology from Anna University, Chennai, India and Ph.D.
in Pharmacology from the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston,
Texas. She is affiliated with the Association of University
Technology Managers and the Licensing Executives Society.
Content:
While participation in regional economic development is not a
new role for most university tech transfer offices, economic
development metrics have not been a part of their performance
measures. Increasing number of internal and external constituencies
are expecting universities and local colleges to be more than
effective partners in economic development. Dr. Perumal will
highlight the challenges for a tech transfer office when professionals
with differing missions but common causes come together to establish
productive alliances.
