"An Overview of the Center for Life Sciences Technology and Consortium – Why the Gulf Coast Region"

Mr. Baca has over 23 years of experience in senior administration within Academic Health Center Medical Schools. Prior to coming to the University of Houston, Mr. Baca was involved in biotechnology workforce planning activities as Director of the Office of Biotechnology in The University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. Mr. Baca has a Masters of Arts in Organizational Management. clbaca@uh.edu

The Center of Life Sciences Technology Consortium based at the University of Houston seeks to support the dynamic needs of the biotech cluster by innovating in the following areas:

· Formation of an industry agreement to explore solutions to challenges of transdisciplinary educational and workforce development
· Devising new ways to track labor market and skills demand data and make the data usable for entities responsible for developing education, training, and career development materials
· Creating industry-led curriculum on both the fundamentals of biotechnology, as well as new and emerging topics for incumbent workers and the broader educational community, and creating it faster than is possible through regular educational channels
· Encouraging dissemination and collaboration on education and workforce development innovations through the web-portal
· Supporting the programs created to meet the needs of regional life science companies, to be attractive to life science companies that may wish to locate or re-locate to Texas
· Establishing high quality programs that increase the region's and state's life science/biotechnology industry global competitiveness
· The Consortium will ultimately serve as a regional clearinghouse for the biotechnology/life-science industry labor market and occupational information; competency and skills requirement information; education and training; internships; and reference
· Promoting of high standards for the education and training for a workforce in the biotechnology and life sciences arena
· Placing of associates degree graduates in both biotechnology and life sciences programs on successful career paths and baccalaureate programs
