Meeting Topic:
“Building the Biotech Future- New Programs at the University of Houston”

Rupa Iyer, Ph.D.

Dr. Iyer is the Director of Biotechnology programs and a Research Associate Professor at the University of Houston’s College of Technology, where she is developing the academic and training programs in Biotechnology. The academic program is an interdisciplinary Bachelor’s degree that integrates molecular biology, bioprocessing, nanobiotechnolgy and has an emphasis on environmental biotechnology. The training programs for incumbent and entrant biotech workers. These programs are developed in collaboration with industry and academic partners that will design courses and create new laboratory modules. The programs are currently supported by state and federal grants of over a million dollars. Dr. Iyer has received her M.S in Biotechnology from the University of Mumbai, India, her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in microbial molecular genetics and has conducted her postdoctoral studies at M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center in the department of Pharmacology.

The College of Technology was one of the earliest colleges to be established within the University of Houston and is responsible for teaching and granting degrees related to practical areas of technology and consumer science. This practical emphasis helps to bring about a smooth transition from school to the everyday workplace for our students and makes their skills valuable in a very immediate way to the organizations that hire them. It is one of the reasons why two thirds of College of Technology’s students are employed in their field even before graduation, according to our 2003 student survey. The Center for Life Sciences Technology is affiliated with the College of Technology and is the information resource at the University of Houston for Life Science Technology. It covers the latest news, career, educational opportunities for the state of Texas.
